Architectural Coating Application Plan and Construction Techniques

Construction technology

This guide applies to stone-like texture coatings made from synthetic resin emulsion as binder, with natural colored sand and stone powder, applied by spraying.

Pre-Application Preparation

1. Substrate Requirements:

Firm, flat, dry (moisture content < 10%), clean (free of oil, dust), without hollow spots or cracks.
Alkalinity: pH value < 10.
Curing: New plastered walls require standard curing for over 28 days.

2. Environmental Conditions:

Application Temperature: 5℃ ~ 35℃.
Air Humidity: < 80%.
Weather: No rain, snow, or strong wind (stop application if wind speed > 5m/s).
Substrate surface temperature must be at least 3°C above the dew point to prevent condensation.

3. Materials & Tools:

Materials:  Special Alkali-Resistant Sealer Primer, Stone-Like Paint (Main Material), Waterborne Topcoat Varnish.
Tools: Air compressor, Special spray gun for stone-like paint (nozzle size typically 6-8mm), Scaffolding, Roller, Brush, Masking tape, Protective film, etc.

Standard Application Steps, Consumption & Intervals

Construction Steps Materials Construction method Reference dosage (kg/㎡) Recoating interval (25℃, humidity <75%)
Grassroots treatment —— Repair and polish —— ——
Apply primer. Dedicated alkali-resistant sealing primer Roller/Spray 0.10~0.15 ≥2 hours (after surface drying)
Spray-on stone-effect paint Stone-effect paint (main material) Spraying 3.5–5.0 ≥24 hours (after actual work)
Apply a topcoat. Water-based clear coat Roller/Spray 0.10~0.15 ——

Consumption Notes

Primer/Topcoat Consumption: May vary slightly depending on substrate smoothness and application technique.

Stone-Like Paint Consumption: This is the **most critical and variable factor.

  • 3.5 kg/m²: Suitable for flat surfaces, small granules, thin-film effects.
  • 4.0 ~ 4.5 kg/m²: Standard consumption, suitable for most conventional textures like lychee pattern or rock finish
  • 5.0 kg/m² or more:  Suitable for strong 3D relief effects or large granules. Consumption increases significantly.

Key Points for Spray Operation

1. Spraying Stone-Like Paint:

Stir Thoroughly: Must be stirred thoroughly before use. **Strictly prohibit dilution with water** to avoid delamination or color inconsistency.
Spray Technique: Use the "cross-spray method": spray horizontally first, then vertically. Ensures uniform film thickness, no misses, and consistent color.
Pressure & Distance: Air compressor pressure should be stable at 0.6-0.8 MPa. Maintain a consistent distance of 30-50cm between the nozzle and the wall.
Complete in One Go: The same wall should be sprayed continuously, ideally by one person, to avoid noticeable seams.
Grid Work: Designing and applying in sections defined by grids is recommended. Apply masking tape before spraying to define grids, helping prevent cracking and seam issues.

2. Topcoat Application:

Timing: Must be applied only after the stone-like paint is **completely dry.
Function: Enhances dirt resistance, water resistance, UV resistance, and extends the overall service life.
Method: Apply evenly using a short-pile roller, ensuring complete coverage without misses.

Precautions

  • Safety First: Follow safety regulations for work at heights. Wear protective equipment like helmets, safety harnesses, etc.
  • Protection: Protect non-painted areas like windows, doors, railings, and glass by masking with protective film before application.
  • Batch Procurement: Materials for the same project, especially the main stone-like paint, should be from the same production batch. Reserve 5%-10% extra material for future touch-ups to prevent color differences.
  • Tool Cleaning: Clean all equipment and tools thoroughly with water immediately after use to prevent clogging due to cured paint.
