Hydrophobically Modified Hydroxyethyl Cellulose

Category: Northern Tianpu Cellulose

HMHEC is a modified product in which hydrophobic long chains (such as C12–C16 alkyl groups) are incorporated into the HEMC molecular chain. This unique structure enables HMHEC to form an associative network in aqueous phases, providing remarkable shear-thinning rheological properties and excellent anti-splash performance. HMHEC is particularly well-suited for high-end coatings with stringent requirements for rheological behavior: it offers high viscosity during storage (preventing sedimentation) and a sharp drop in viscosity during application (making it easy to brush).

Technical Parameters

Hydroxyethyl molar substitution degree1.8–3.0
Hydrophobic chain content0.5–2.0% (by weight)
Viscosity characteristics (1% solution, Brookfield)Low shear viscosity (LVT, 6 rpm)≥20,000 mPa·s
High Shear Viscosity (HV, 60 rpm)3,000–8,000 mPa·s
Water resistanceThe water absorption rate of the lacquer film is reduced by 15–30%.
Compatibility with emulsionsBroadly matched VAE, acrylic, and styrene-acrylic emulsions

Application Highlights

High-end latex paint: Outstanding resistance to splashing and smooth rolling performance, enhancing construction efficiency.

Waterproof coatings and sealants: Enhance the water resistance and dust-repellent properties of paint films.

Color paste concentration system: prevents pigment settling and improves color development.

Innovation Advantage: It can replace some ASE/HASE thickeners, reducing formulation costs and enhancing environmental adaptability (frost-thaw resistance and electrolyte tolerance).
